Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Today is Day 6.

*Wednesday, Jan. 2nd: Subway Day
-- Wednesday, Jan. 2nd- we will have NO Superstar time so every classroom will have a few extra minutes to review PBIS expectations for all common areas and your classroom. ALL teachers should review expectations as if it is the first day of school again.  Children and adults will need reminding

--Jan. 2-Jan. 4-ALL teachers are expected to eat at the Lunch Table with the students to make sure the PBIS expectations are enforced.  Starting Jan. 7, the grade levels can return to their plan for covering each other so you can have some Duty Free time as needed.  **Remember, that is what the SIT team voted on...each grade level is to work out a Duty Free coverage for themselves as we will not provide extra monitors.**

--LTM's are on schedule for each day this week.  Don't be late

We are no longer using the Orange Bees.  Please use the Blue Bee's for the next  incentives.

Happy Birthday Mr. Hart!!!!!!

Welcome Back and Happy New Year!  We hope everyone is rested and ready to go.

Congratulations to Mrs. Woodson- Teacher of the Year and Mr. Dimov- Classified Staff Member of the Year.  Let's hope they don't get too full of themselves.

Please spend the next days reviewing our PBIS procedures with your students.  Remember, that teaching and modeling expectations is critical to the PBIS process.

Don't forget to follow Speas on Twitter to get updates and reminders.

Gentle Reminders:
* When planning and executing field trip plans, please keep in mind that it is against policy to require parents to accompany students on trips.  We cannot exclude students from trips for behavior, or inability to pay.

Note:  All plants, animals and other items, which might be damaged by the set back temperatures, should be taken home.

Turn off all nonessential electronic equipment throughout the facility.

Close and secure all windows, doors and close all blinds for insulation and security.

*As you interact with parents and students about the tragedy last week, they will have questions about our school security.  If you cannot communicate a sense of security, please direct them to the office.  It is also important that we make our kids feel safe--we will not make comments that make children feel unsafe, no matter how we feel.  We are the adults!  Our mood determines the mood of the school.

Please remind students and parents of the following things, copied and pasted from an email from Theo Helm:

Hello all -- I know you've probably had your share of phone calls today from parents who are worried after the shootings in Connecticut. Here are a few points to make as people call or stop in to talk. Try to keep emphasizing these things, and if that doesn't satisfy them, refer them to one of us. If I can do anything, please call.

Middle and high schools have security officers. As for elementary schools, we have spoken to law enforcement (Winston-Salem and Kernersville police, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office) and they are increasing their patrols and presence this week.

Every school has a safety plan that is reviewed with law enforcement. As part of this plan, every school does lockdown drills at least twice a year.

We are going to review our safety procedures in light of what we can learn from what happened in Connecticut to see how they can be improved.

Above all, be empathetic with parents – they’re understandably nervous, and they need to know that you worry about their children as much as they do

Gentle Reminders:
* When planning and executing field trip plans, please keep in mind that it is against policy to require parents to accompany students on trips.  We cannot exclude students from trips for behavior, or inability to pay.

*Leading up to the break, please encourage students to read as much as they can and take AR tests.

Today is Day 5.  12/12/12

*There will be no Early Risers this week.

*Welcome back Mr. Hart.  If you see him, please welcome him back.

*Our Parent Night is this Thursday. Are you ready?

* We have started our coin collection drive for the families affected by Hurricane Sandy.  There will be containers set up in the building.  They should be available in the gym starting today.  We will update when we get more information.

*The Speas PTA is looking for Volunteers for a few fun Christmas things for staff and students.  If you know anyone, please pass the following information along.  Folks can contact SR if they are interested.

The Speas PTA would like to share with you 3 great opportunities you have to show your support to Speas students and teachers.
1st – Teacher Holiday Lunch – December 17, from 10:30-1:30 Volunteer 1 hour to cover lunch and recess so that your child’s teacher can attend a special catered lunch
2nd – Student Gift Wrapping – Wrap gifts that students “purchase” from the Bee Hive Store - Volunteer for 1-2 hours on one of the following days: December 14, 17, 18 or 19
3rd – Assist with the PTA Craft table during Speas Family Night on December 13 – volunteer for one 20-30 minute shift
*Don't forget to register for the Beehive Christmas Shop online:

Gentle Reminders:

* When planning and executing field trip plans, please keep in mind that it is against policy to require parents to accompany students on trips.  We cannot exclude students from trips for behavior, or inability to pay.

*Leading up to the break, please encourage students to read as much as they can and take AR tests.
